Artist to Know: Tom MacDonald
1. Who are you? Tom MacDonald. Artist, musician, producer and egotist extraordinaire. 2. Where are you from? Vancouver, B.C. I lived in Edmonton for a few years and I’ve been spending a lot of time in Los Angeles lately. 3. What got you started in music? I’ve always been a fan of the arts since I was a kid. I used to write a lot of poetry when I was young. I was a professional wrestler (the WWF-kind) for a long time and when I got out of the wrestling business, I started spending a lot more time writing poetry. Turning the poems into songs was just a natural progression, I think.
4. Favourite male & female artist? I couldn’t pick just one of each. There’s too many great people who’ve come down the line. I love Roger Waters. I’m a huge Robert Plant fan. I think he’s one of the most talented song writers there ever was. He’s in his late fifties and he’s still making relevant music. The stuff he did with Zeppelin some twenty-odd years ago is still revered as some of the best rock and roll ever made. I’m a huge Kurt Cobain fan as well. He just always had something real to say. He never really made any bullshit music, you know? All of his songs were honest glimpses of who he was. Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Cyndi Lauper. I think women have a lot harsher terrain to navigate in the entertainment business and I really admire the ones who have found their stride and remained true to themselves. Janis Joplin kicks ass. 5. Favorite song? Way too many to name. I really like old stoner rock and folk music. I’m not sure if I could pick just one song. Marley had so many great tunes. So did Zeppelin and Floyd and Steppenwolf and The Beatles and Nirvana. The 90’s produced some of the most radical new-age rock that there ever was. I don’t think I could pick one track. 6. Biggest accomplishment so far? I’m not really sure. The things I think are going to be my “biggest accomplishments yet” just end up being small milestones. Enough is never enough, you know? If I was FORCED to pick my “biggest accomplishment so far”, I’m not even sure it would pertain to music. I’ve made major strides in my personal life and there’s just SO much more that I expect for myself in regards to the record business. Touring Europe twice in one year was pretty sweet, though.
7. Hardest thing about the industry? The politics, I guess. Making music is the easy part. Watching people who have close to zero artistic worth getting put on gets tough after a while. It’s a little disheartening. Staying motivated and positive is a little bit of a battle, but, you know. It isn’t really ‘hard’ as much as it is draining. 8.Your favourite song of your own and why? Hm. I haven’t made my favourite song yet. Everything that I’ve done is a little slice of something I actually dealt with, so, they all mean quite a bit to me. 9. What do you do when not making music? Mostly think about making music. I send a lot of emails. I network. I go to events. I exercise. I paint. I draw. I create other forms of art. Mostly just think about making music, though. 10. What are you working on currently? Tons. I’ve recorded almost thirty songs since getting to Los Angeles. I’m working on catching up with myself, really. I’ve got TONS of unreleased material and videos at this point, so…I guess Im just working on releasing what I’ve archived while continuing to work on new stuff. 11. Anything you want to tell our readers? Not really. I appreciate all the support that I’ve got over the past couple years. There’s going to be a time and a place when the people who didn’t jump on the bandwagon will wish they would have. That time is going to be soon too. So, get at me while there’s time. I’m about to make my Mamma real proud and my competition real jealous.
